Patient death sparks protests at Arambagh govt medical college over alleged negligence

A patient’s death at Arambagh Prafulla Chandra Sen Government Medical College and Hospital in Hooghly on Wednesday evening led to protests by her family. Kalpana Tanti, a resident of Ward No. 2 in Arambagh, was admitted to the hospital with throat issues caused by a cold. Her family alleged that she died due to inadequate medical attention during treatment.

According to the family, a doctor visited Kalpana once during the day. Despite her condition deteriorating, no further medical intervention was provided. Repeated requests to on-duty nurses for assistance were reportedly ignored. The family also alleged that when they attempted to transfer her to another facility, their requests were denied. A family member said, “We kept calling for the doctor, but he went to another ward. By the time he came back, the patient had died.”

Other patients’ families present at the hospital shared similar complaints. They alleged that nurses, ward boys, and ward girls were unresponsive and that doctors conducted only brief rounds without providing detailed care. Many raised concerns about delays in treatment during emergencies and the behavior of the hospital staff.

The death has led to growing grievances from patients and their families regarding the functioning of the hospital. Allegations include negligence in patient care, unresponsiveness from staff, and insufficient attention from medical professionals during critical situations.
